Watamu is a small, relaxed beach town north of Mombasa with one of Kenya’s best marine national parks right off the sand. Sea turtles nest on the beaches and the coral gardens are a short boat ride away.
Behind the town is Mida Creek, a mangrove-lined tidal creek with a canopy walkway and great sunsets, and the Gede Ruins, a 12th-century Swahili town hidden in the forest.
Fly to Malindi airport (about 20 minutes away), or take the SGR to Mombasa and drive about 2 hours north.
December–March is hot and calm in the mornings; July–October is cooler and dry.
